Last week, our team replaced an underpowered outdoor range hood for a cooking-loving couple in Larchmont. They often entertain, love high-heat stir-fry and grilling, and need real smoke capture, not just noise. Here’s how we handled the project, step by step.
Site check and sizing. We measured the grill and side burner, confirmed BTU output, and checked the existing duct path. The old hood was too shallow and too weak for open-air crosswinds.
Recommendation. We proposed a 48-inch, 1200 CFM stainless outdoor canopy, 6 inches wider than the grill, with a remote inline blower for quiet operation. The plan included a rigid metal duct, a backdraft damper, and a weather-rated exterior cap.
Prep and protection. Counters and appliances were covered, power was shut off, and safe mounting points were verified. We removed the old hood and inspected the duct - there was a tight elbow restricting airflow.
Installation. We set the new hood at the manufacturer’s height (about 34 inches above the grill), upsized the duct to 10 inches, straightened the run to reduce static pressure, sealed every joint, and added vibration pads. The weather cap and bird screen were installed and flashed to shed rain.
Testing and training. With the grill on high, we verified capture at all speeds and checked airflow at the exterior cap. Filters and LED lighting were reviewed, and we showed the homeowners simple monthly cleaning steps.
As a result, smoke clears fast, even during wok cooking. The new remote blower is noticeably quieter. Grease stays in the baffle filters, not on the ceiling. Most importantly, the patio is comfortable for guests while cooking.
What did we install?
• 48-inch 304 stainless outdoor canopy
• 1200 CFM remote/inline blower
• 10-inch rigid duct, sealed joints, backdraft damper
• Weather-rated exterior wall cap with bird screen
• LED task lighting and multi-speed controls
Why does this matter in Larchmont? Outdoor kitchens in coastal Westchester face wind and humidity. A deeper canopy, higher CFM, and smooth ductwork keep air clear and equipment lasting longer.
